Computer Assistance in Image-Based Diagnosis and Therapy

Fraunhofer MEVIS is one of the leading global and internationally networked research and development centers for computer assistance in image-based medicine. It follows a patient-centered and workflow-oriented approach to resolve clinically relevant issues in image-based diagnosis and therapy. Fraunhofer MEVIS focuses on epidemiologically significant diseases of the cardiovascular system, the brain, breast, liver and lung, as well as oncological disorders.

In cooperation with the spin-off MeVis Medical Solutions AG and other industrial partners, Fraunhofer MEVIS has established a quality-assured innovation chain from basic research to clinical prototypes to certified medical products. In addition, Fraunhofer MEVIS maintains a global network of clinical partners, and scientific and academic institutions. The institute has close relationships with the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven and especially with the University of Bremen, the Jacobs University, and the University of Luebeck.

In January 2009 a foundation professorship on modeling and simulation of biophysical processes was established at the Jacobs University through a private donation of Conrad und Lotti Naber. In November 2009 another foundation professorship on MR imaging was established at the University of Bremen financially supported by the Stiftung Bremer Wertpapierboerse. In April 2010 the Fraunhofer MEVIS project group on image registration was founded at the University of Luebeck funded by the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein. The work of all three groups is closely interwoven with Fraunhofer MEVIS.

Fraunhofer MEVIS was founded in August, 1995 in Bremen as a non-profit limited liability company MeVis Research and later integrated as an institute of the Fraunhofer Society on January 1, 2009. The work of Fraunhofer MEVIS is supervised by an international board of trustees.
